Once upon a time, RPG meetings I was in were noteworthy for three things.

First, good gaming.

Second, good times with friends.

Third, good God, the amount of chips and beer we consumed.

Lots of Doritos. Lots of Nacho Cheese Doritos. A goodly number of regular potato chips. Dip and salsa. And, for special treats, cookies and brownies. Oh, and bowls of M&Ms.

Folks would arrive with chips, as well as a sixpack — sometimes of soda, usually of beer. And most of it would be consumed by the end of the day/evening. Lots of dead soldiers, watching over the dead orcs.

Last night, at Doyce’s Star Wars RPG …

I drank one beer. And drank ice water the rest of the night.

Everyone else drank soda, or water, or (in one case) a (shudder) Red Bull (on the rocks).

We had a yummy relatively healthful dinner up front, courtesy of Doyce (at the grill) and Jackie (at the store and propane place). And that was it. One lonely bag of chips came out, late in the game, was nibbled on sans salsa, by some of the players. The ones who weren’t on various diets, or just full.

Not a complaint, mind you, certainly not at the hospitality or the provender provided. Just sort of an interesting observation about how … well, how we’re all, er, getting, ah, more mature. That’s it. More mature.

Well I think it’s interesting.

  1. We are very similar here at home.

Early in WEF, everyone brought their 2-liters of soda and bag of chips or something. There was always stuff left over afterwards, but not enough to make it last that long.

As the years progressed, less chips were brought, more water was consumed than soda, and usually healthier snacks (veggies like baby carrots and such) were more likely.

[by the way, if the picture on the bottom of the page (the third one from the left) is you and the Kitten in a mirror, you should consider submittinig it to The Mirror Project.]

  2. Well for yesterday’s marathon Living Force modules, most folks had a big lunch beforehand, mostly of relatively healthy food. It wasn’t until late in the first module that some Oreos suddenly showed up.

We broke for dinner — leftovers, ham sandwiches — then dug back into the game. Midway through that … the Oreos reappeared. Then some chip and salsa. Then some cookies from CostCo.

(I’d seriously considered bringing over fruit platter, but decided against it.)

A fair amount of soda was consumed, but some water, too, and no beer.

Major props to Rey, btw, who’s doing some serious dieting, even in the face of a bunch of food that he couldn’t eat.

So it was, perhaps, a little bit of a throwback game, at least in comparison to the game that provoked this original post, and certainly compared to the Golden College Days of Yore. Man, wish I still had the metabolism I had then …
