Firefly, Week 2

Observations (possibly with spoilers):…

Observations (possibly with spoilers):

  • Standard D&D “Found Derelict” Protocol: Cleric says prayers, everyone else scavenges for stuff.
  • I like the Engineer. I really do. She’s fun.

  • I also like the Reverend. For many years, clergy were especially wise and influential in TV and movies. Then (along about the 60s) they became vain, corrupt, clueless, or otherwise an object of scorn. It’s nice and refreshing to see one now (and Ron Glass to boot) who is cool, has some nice stuff to say, but isn’t automatically deferred to or dissed.

  • Margie’s comment regarding Jayne: “I hope he turns out to have some redeeming quality.” I trust Joss. He’ll set up Jayne as the bad-ass with attitude, then do something “fun” to knock the props out from under him.

  • Entertaining ep. Nothing wildly memorable (though I suspect it sets up the Reavers for a larger return visit later). Good way to hide the sibs. Good (further) intro/interrogation of the characters, of whom we learn bit by bit.

  • Based on the commercials, I don’t think this show is aimed (or being sold to advertisers) to our demographic. Strip off about 20 years (and, ahem, 20 points of IQ), and maybe it would all make sense.
