Heck, I was going to do a nice long post about Thanksgiving dinner and related festivities and all, with the in-laws, and the Testerfolk and Randy all in attendance, but Doyce pegged it:
That done (around 2pm), we went over to the Consortium for chatting and games. And food. Gods forbid that we should forget the food, because it was good.
He also forgot the drink, both good wine and killer margaritas.
But that wasn’t enough to overwhelm the food, both chippy snacks beforehand, and some marvelous deep-fried bird (and mashed potatoes and veggies and salad and more desserts brought over by Jackie than anyone could have dreamed of eating).
Mmmm. And a good time had by all.
Question: I’ve heard a lot of folks frying their turkey rather than roasting it. Is this a “new tradition” kind of thing, or…? I don’t think I’ve had fried turkey stuff.
Started in the South (my Cajun former boss was talking about it a decade ago), but has reached up at least this far with a fury — you can find turkey roasting pots (and burners) at Home Depot or any place that sells cookware around this time of year.
Because the hot oil gets inside the bird as well as outside, a full-blown turkey cooks in a bit over an hour, as I recall, and is very moist. Part of the process is injecting the bird under the skin with seasoning. Yum.
Obviously you can’t have stuffing in the turkey when doing this.
Since the peanut oil involved is in large quantities and not cheap, doing multiple turkeys at a time is recommended. My boss used to talk about it being a neighborhood activity.
I should point out that I probably forgot about the find drinks BECAUSE of the fine drinks, of which I believe I had a number.
I believe this since I don’t recall the number 😉
