For those who hadn’t heard, Fox has decided not to buy any more Firefly eps, though work continues on the last ones filmed.
Now, doesn’t that just suck?
Fortunately, neither creator Joss Whedon nor the fan base are giving up, and there’s a decent chance, given the costs and popularity of the show, that some other network (UPN, anyone?) will pick it up. But giving them a bit of encouragement to do so .
Damn, first Farscape, now this. Not a good year for my favorite TV shows.
Don’t expect UPN to pick it up — it would be a direct competitor of Enterprise, which is the entire franchise for UPN.
SciFi is moving away from hardware-oriented shows, hence its cancelling of Farscape (and not buying the B5: Rangers show).
The WB might, but they’re more entrenched in comic book-based shows (Birds of Prey was cancelled, though, I hear).
That leaves not much in the way of networks. TNT cancelled Witchblade and Crusade, so I wouldn’t expect them to be an outlet, either.
That’s a possible hitch with UPN, drawing attention away from the ST franchise. On the other hand, that franchise is beginnning to wane more than a bit — the last Next Gen movie is out, and while Enterprise has been decently successful, I don’t hear any great clamor for more movies or even more spin-offs.
Given that UPN’s other big money-maker is a Joss show, they might be open to it. You could even make the argument that it will *attract* viewers to Enterprise, as a companion “hardware” show.
We’ll see.
As long as Rick Berman is associated with the Trek franchise, expect bitter opposition to any move to bring Firefly aboard. Sure, it isn’t a bad idea, since UPN airs Buffy, but I do believe that Paramount will ratchet up the anti-Joss rhetoric should it look like it may happen.
Berman’s a jerk of the first degree.
Oh, from what I’ve heard, don’t bet on this being the last Next Gen film. It might be the last with Stewart, but money talks . . .
True. And some of Joss’s past Firefly-as-anti-ST bits may come back to haunt him.
Well, we’ll see.
