Hmmm. This article is almost enough to make me search out a rear wheel drive for our next car.
But — given my wussiness driving in slick conditions, and where we live — not quite.

Pretty much spot on.
I prefer RWD or AWD. The Audi’s and Subaru’s drive train’s feel really good while driving.
Though I would gladly give this up for one of the new Mini Cooper S’s…
My mid-engined, rear-wheel drive car has some oversteer (especially in slick conditions – I wouldn’t drive it in the snow on a bet), but it is much more enjoyable to drive on small country roads and in the mountains.
However, my front wheel drive car has a few advantages on the highway. Including noise levels and more comfortable seats.
My solution – have one of each!
I used to have a Pinto — 1977, the year that didn’t explode, nestled between two years that did — and it was fun to drive in the snow. I still prefer AWD for bad weather, but it made life interesting.
I suspect that AWD would be pretty nice, but the fact that it’s also going to be a commute car makes me worry about the MPGs on AWD vehicles I know.
Did find out (as I was taking our Sienna in for service this morning) that Toyota has added an AWD option on the new model year Sienna, prompting a lot of die-hard Previa owners to finally trade theirs in.
