Word has it that the Heinlein Trust has given the go-ahead for Spider Robinson to flesh out a detailed novel outline called Variable Star.
Hmmmm.
On the one hand, posthumous “fleshing out of a story outline” exercises are rarely satisfying. The recent Dune exercises, and the previous Asimov robot tales stand testimony to that.
On the other hand, Robinson can write, and he has an almost religious respect for Heinlein’s work.
Should be interesting.
Neat!
I’ll pass. I learned my lesson with Silverberg’s expanding of Asimov’s “Nightfall.”
Well, heck, I didn’t like some of the expansions that Asimov did of his earlier work. In terms of writing a new story from “detailed notes,” though, I trust Robinson will come up with something entertaining, even if it probably won’t be either Heinlein or Robinson as their best.
Sounds interesting enough; I’ll keep an eye on this project.
And I hope everyone is aware of the lost-and-now-found first RAH novel, to be published in January?
I’m hoping that Spider can pull this off. I have enjoyed the Callahan’s stories (first read them when they first appeared in Analog), but the novels have been iffy. I’ve liked some, but not all of the Callahan’s novels. I enjoyed “Stardancer”, but the sequels were not quite as good. And I haven’t really liked his stand alone novels.
But, as somebody around here recently said, it beats being poked in the eye with a sharp stick, so I’ll give it a try.
