A score of 44 is not going to get me any prizes, I fear.
I’ve seen bits and pieces of several of the others, of course, and I already know there are quite a few of the above that I’d love to watch some time (certainly none of the one I have watched was a dud).
I have no idea of the origin of the list, though.
UPDATE: Make that 45. And I’ve italicized the unwatched ones on the list I’d like to see most (though there are others there I know are also quite worthy).
UPDATE: Make that 47, with translated titles (thanks, Jack).
UPDATE: Okay, let’s do all these other mods suggested by Solonor, including “#” for “least favorites” (movies I won’t go out of my way to rewatch) and underlines for ones owned. I think I’ll decline on asterisking stuff.
(via Scott)
It’s the IMDB’s top 100 list.
Ah. Thanks. Interesting.
You should watch Schindler’s List it’s a very good movie.
You know, I’m again a little surprised not to see Seven Samurai and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly on either the “seen” or the “want to see” list (that’s #8 and #26). Not that the use of the less familiar original titles helps.
Meanwhile, Spirited Away (#43) is about as good as animated movies get.
I can’t believe how many great films you’ve missed! Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, High Noon, Touch of Evil, Duck Soup…
At least most of those are on your list. Get cracking, man!
Thanks, Jack. I’ve bolded those two, which I have, indeed, seen (and enjoyed).
I can loan you Leon (the Professional) It rocks! Classic Besson.
Btw:
94%
The ones that I have not seen:
32. Pianist, The (2002) have no interest in seeing
39. Third Man, The (1949) will see when it comes out on DVD
56. Cidade de Deus (2002) have no interest in seeing
96. City Lights (1931) have no interest in seeing
91. Finding Nemo (2003) Mixed reviews leave me leary
92. Donnie Darko (2001) Now out on DVD, must go and rent
Bow down to me! (at least until Randy does his list)
Dave you should go and translate the foreign ones, because I can’t believe you haven’t seen:
100. Sjunde inseglet, Det (1957)(the Seventh Seal)
21. Fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain, Le (2001)(Amalie)
40. C’era una volta il West (1968)(Once upon a time in the west)
Actually, no, I have not seen those three. Though Doyce has loaned me Amelie for some time. But thank you for the translations.
I think you would enjoy Finding Nemo.
Nope, I clock in at 75.
Not:
Godfather — should
Godfather II — ditto
Memento — wanna
12 Angry Men — actually, probably have seen it on TV, but 30+ years ago
Sunset Blvd. — ditto
the Pianist — when I’m in the mood for a good concentration camp film
Paths of Glory — ?
the Third Man — ?
Requiem For a Dream — ?
M — ?
All About Eve — maybe
Double Indemnity — maybe
Raging Bull — maybe; not much of a boxing fan
American History X — wanna
the Manchurian Candidate — maybe; not a Sinatra fan
Annie Hall — maybe
On the Waterfront — feh
Strangers on a Train — maybe
Duck Soup — started it 3 or 4 times, lost interest
Donnie Darko — wanna
Notorious — ?
City Lights — maybe
the General — started it twice, lost interest
the Seventh Seal — maybe
This is my list, renumbered by me. Most of the other movies I don’t have much interest in seeing, except maybe for Ran, which I have only seen part of. And not all of these movies were ones I would have sought out myself — eg., American Beauty and Fight Club were friends’ choices and I was with them so I couldn’t very well spend the entire two hours in the bathroom.
1. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The (2003)
2. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The (2002)

30. Metropolis (1927)
31. Toy Story 2 (1999)
32. Princess Bride, The (1987)
33. Notorious (1946)
M – M is very good and disturbing. A movie like this wouldn’t be made for another 40 years. A good Peter Lorre flick.
Paths of Glory – Great Kubrik flick about WW I. Think Breaker Morant.
Notorious – Grant, Bergman, Claude Rains…good times!
the Manchurian Candidate – This is one of the ones that Frank is good in. Besides, Angela Lansbury is the disturbing part of this movie (but after the Three Musketeers, your immune to her Randy).
Most of the Movies on the list are worth watching just because of the Benchmark work done in them.
Yes. Most of the films are solid ones, or cultural icons, or both.
I’ll also echo the recommendation for The Manchurian Candidate. Hell, I should make it required viewing for my Spycraft campaign …
My top twenty from the list:
1. Casablanca
2. Shichinin no samurai (1954) (The Seven Samurai)
3. Citizen Kane (1941)
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
5. Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)
6. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
7. Maltese Falcon, The (1941)
8. Sting, The (1973)
9. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
10. Some Like It Hot (1959)
11. Usual Suspects, The (1995)
12. Pulp Fiction (1994)
13. Rear Window (1954)
14. Star Wars (1977)
15. Great Escape, The (1963)
16. Alien (1979)
17. Kill Bill. Vol 1 (2003)
18. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
19. High Noon (1952)
20. Leon (The Professional) (1994)
Movies from the list I hated (in no real order)
1. Godfather, The (1972)
2. Godfather: Part II, The (1974)
3. Fight Club (1999) God awful stupid on to many levels to count. Only entertaining for the first twenty minutes or so.
4. Se7en (1995) Only good in the last few minutes…
5. On the Waterfront (1954)
6. Sixth Sense, The (1999) Transparent, with huge plot holes…
Seen It. Seen it. Ain’t Seen It.
I was going to give this one a pass, but Cindy wants me to do it. So I figured, what…
If you’re friends jumped off a cliff…
But mom… All the cool kids are doing it!…

Updated, per the last UPDATE note.

Dave, you have GOT to see “The Shawshank Redemption.” The premise isn’t likely to draw you in, and it hasn’t got one iota of “good” special effects, but it is one of the FINEST movies I have ever seen. The acting is great, and the movie is quite moving. I recommend it highly.
It certainly comes highly recommended.
