Early descriptions of a classified Pentagon study of the Iraq War from the perspective of Iraqi army officers is revealing some interesting tidbits, including:
- Saddam was so convinced that there would be no actual ground war, just another bombing campaign, that he deployed his troops to quell expected uprisings, rather than to defend against invasion.
- Psyops phone calls to Iraqi officials and officers by Arab-speaking US forces, calling on them to turn on Saddam, were thought to be a trap by Saddam’s internal security and ignored — except that the folks involved stopped using the phone, constricting communications.
- Leaflet drops didn’t convince anyone to surrender per se — but did let Iraqi soldiers know that US bombers could be hitting them with munitions instead.
- In confirmation of David Kay’s statements, it seems that while no Special Republican Guards units actually had chemical or biological weapons, the officers of each unit believed that other units did have them.
