There are but a smattering of stores over at the Colorado Mills that carry ties. Three observations:
- There are a lot of ugly ties out there. The vast majority, in fact.
- There are a lot of expensive ties out there. This does not necessarily correlate with the previous point.
- There are a lot of ties out there that strike me as overly wide. While a tie being wide does not necessarily make it ugly, it doesn’t help, and a wide ugly tie is less forgivable than a narrow one.
Well, we went tie-free shortly before 9/11, which was a blessing as we did not have to wear suits downtown with all the smoke post-9/11.
But when I was wearing ties, a few sources that were odd, but fit my general astronomical/SF/gaming/etc. modes…
Look for a comic called “User Friendly”. They put out a catalog, IIRC, that has some good computer-related ties. I’ll try and see if I still have a catalog.
Do a search for M.C. Escher. There was a firm on the web that was selling very nice Escher-related ties. I have several.
Jos. A. Banks (men’s suits) used to do several ties a year that were somewhat abstract depictions of the molecules of various medicines. The theme was each medicine was to treat some sort of childhood ailment, and a portion of the proceeds went to various children’s hospitals. I bought the run each year for three years. Good ties, but I don’t know if they still do it. They did it around Christmas each year.
Good clues, yes. One problem I have is that while I don’t know what makes up an attractive tie to me, I know it when I see it. Sort of like obscenity. Which is not to say that I want to get obscene ties or anything.
So, for example, I imagine an Escher tie would be attractive, but wouldn’t be quite — right for me.
Margie reminds me that Fathers Day is right around the corner.
I wonder if PvP has any “I spent my treasure on Ale & Whores!” ties? Maybe not …
Yeah, but it’s just so hard to fit stuff on a narrow tie!
Okay, now that’s just scary …
Hmmm. Via Fred, there are some here that aren’t too bad …
By and large, I’m staying away from things that look *too* weird or un-pro. But subtle techie stuff — yeah, that works. (Like my conservative blue tie with little Tiggers on it. Or the similar one with little Sagehens …)
