Hey, look what happens when you combine FEC campaign contribution statements with the Internet: a tool for looking up how much your neighbors contributed to whom.

All calculations are based on records filed with the FEC of contributions by all individuals totalling more than $200 to a single campaign between January 1, 2003 and February 29, 2004.

On the one hand, I’m vaguely shocked. On the other hand, I’m a big believer in full disclosure of campaign contributions as the least-worst way of handling campaign financing issues.

You can also see breakouts of contributions by state, county, zip, as well as largest hotel bills incurred by a candidate, or favorite hotel.

There’s also an interesting breakout by who got the most small contributions from the most places in that period (Dean, followed by Bush), who got the most repeat and sacrificial contributions (Edwards, followed by Lieberman and Bush), and who got the most large contributions from wealthy Americans (Kerry, followed by Bush).

Interesting stuff.

  1. Had fun with this last month.

Glad to report that there were only about 5 Bush supporters in my zip (they gave the max 2k of course), and about 80% Deaniacs! Woot!

    No Nader money! Also Woot!

Though, Kerry is getting money now that he is the presumptive nominee.
