A movie remake of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is in the works.
I always had mixed feelings about that Irwin Allen schlockfest. On the one hand, it was too frelling cheesy for words, quickly devolving from its initial black-and-white adventure series tone to SF goofiness that would make even its cousin‘s Lost in Space Dr Smith blush.
On the other hand, in the great SF wasteland that was the late 60s, it was … well, just about the only thing going, once Star Trek was gone.
To this day, I still have a fondness for the wall of blinkenlights that made up the Seaview‘s computer. And certainly there’s no reason why the basic setting (an advanced undersea research vessel and What It Discovers Out There) couldn’t make a decent movie, at least.
Still — it won’t be the same without Richard Basehart and David Hedison chewing the scenery and trading off the “Who’s going to be thought insane because of their insane (but correct) interpretation of the insanity going on?” roles on a weekly basis.
