My PC crapped out again on me today, in the middle of a phonecon (for which I was, alas, taking the minutes). BSOD with a “KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR” pointing at atapi.sys, then an endless chain of the same “bad boot sector” errors as before.
Joy.
Dropped it off with the techies, they did a CHKDSK on it (the HD slaved to another machine), and all’s right (for the moment) with the world. Ran an IBM HD diagnostic that came up with no errors.
Gotta keep working on that backup strategy …

***Dave, I saw an ad in the New York Times that Iomega is making something called the REV 35G USB External drive for backups. The claim is that it’s more reliable and efficient than tape drives. It was $349.99 US at J&R Music World in NY … I’m thinking that might solve my backup woes. Right now I’m using ZIP disks, but at 100 Meg a shot, it takes a while to back up.
Yes, ditto for CD/R.
So I’ve convinced the Powers that Be to buy me a Seagate 200Gb External HD, upon which I began last night to back up all my files. The original backup is taking forever (since I only have USB 1.1 ports on my notebook), but after that, it will just be incrementals — and I can sleep a scosh earlier. Not suitable for archiving, but quite suitable for backing up (which is what I need).
$300. US, of course. 🙂
