Dear Mr. Unsolicited Advice,

I am a telemarketer. How can I make calling you a pleasant experience? For you, that is.

If I say that we already have something that does what your product does, that we are very happy with it, that we implemented it recently, and that I don’t anticipate reevaluating that decision for several years, and even if we did, it’s not something I’m in charge of

… please don’t then ask if you can send me literature about it.

Thanks. I hate having to be rude or abrupt.

  1. I have no qualms about being rude to telemarketers. Their call to me is rude, so rudeness they will get in return. I did not purchase a phone for their convenience, and I do not pay for phone service for their convenience. Their call is an interruption to whatever I happen to be doing at the time, and when I have tried to be polite in getting rid of them quickly, thereby saving time for both of us, they refuse to take the hint and insist on prolonging the conversation in the vain hope that I will buy their product or contribute to their charity. I long ago decided never to accept any solicitation by telephone, so when they refuse to abbreviate the conversation, they are wasting their time and mine, which is rude.

My current approach is to interrupt their initial pitch by saying “I’m not interested, please do not call this number again”. Then I hang up, without bothering to wait for a reply. I think you’re far far too nice to them Dave.
