None of this is new information, but it’s nicely presented: popularity of first names in the US over the decades. The data is from the Social Security Administration, “based on samplings of applications for Social Security cards.”
Interestingly, while “David” remains popular, “Dave” shows up early, then drops off the chart. I suspect either folks were realizing that Social Security cards were critical info (not a place for an informal nickname), or else SSA people were telling them so.
