Babe! In! SPAAAAAAAAAACCCEEEE!!!

Cool archive of pulp SF covers with beautiful babes on them, separated into themes (“Babes in Charge,” “Babes under Glass,” “Babes with Blasters”). Keen. (via BoingBoing)…

  1. Hey Dave,

I like the babes in space page, but you should warn people about the accompanying text. Here’s what I sent the dude:

The covers are great. The text critiquing it is patronizing at worst and uninsightful at best. What are you trying to prove, and to whom? The only reason I ask is that I found you via a link on Boing Boing, which is a terrific site.

Is your point that the era from which these covers originated was sexist? Who woulda thunk it? Or are you suggesting that the young nerds who bought these covers fantasized and masturbated? Or that somehow both these phenomena converged under capitalism to try to make money??

Well, good thing our magazine covers of today have progressed beyond such troglodytiousness.

Why pick on these poor little covers? It’s not like they’re being worshiped as models of feminist imagery. I’d be more interested in a feminist critique of your critique, its possible motivations, and examples of pulp cover art that subvert your very pedestrian argument. Feminism has come a long way, baby. So have social critique, sexual politics, and art more broadly.

Why post these pictures if you don’t like them? Or is there something about them that you appreciate but are ashamed to admit? Are you a prig about sexual fantasy in general, or only old-timey stuff for teenage boys?

Personally, the Freas one with the electrified bikini gives me a woody.

    Peace!

  2. Well, I’d consider the commentary on the pics to be mildly ironic, and not to be taken too seriously. As you note, it’s a fine set of pictures, and the urge to find some ways to lampoon them is hard to resist.
