Interesting hot rumors on Six Apart (Movable Type, TypePad) looking to acquire LiveJournal. LJ is open source, and largely used for free.
The deal is a mix of stock and cash, and could be announced sometime later this month, according to those close to the two companies. If the deal goes through, then Six Apart will become one of the largest weblog companies in the world, with nearly 6.5 million users. It also gives the company a very fighting chance against Google’s Blogger and Microsoft’s MSN Spaces.
Which would be a good thing, I’d think, assuming there’s a good business model to go along with it …

And, on cue, we learn that the story is true (thanks, Les). Looks like they’re doing their best to assuage fears and leave LJ (for the moment) as as separate an entity as possible, which is likely a good move.
