Congrats to The Incredibles and Brad Bird for winning Oscars for Animated Feature Film and Sound Editing.
The Animated Feature competition was against Shark Tale and Shrek 2, and I think the win went to the right film — in ten years, the latter two flicks will feel pretty dated, and in thirty nobody will understand why they won. The Incredibles, on the other hand, speaks in a less “topical humor” sort of voice, and will remain, I think, a lot more fresh and viewable into the coming years, even as CG advances beyond its present state.
The Sound Editing award was up against Polar Express and Spider-Man 2. I have no comment on that, save that the sound (and, for that matter, the unnominated music) in The Incredibles was excellent.
It would have been nice to have had Ghost in the Shell 2: innocence and Appleseed nominated. GitS 2 was just stunningly beautiful with an interesting plot (I still love the “lets go talk to the Yakuza” scene).
They would at least been compitition for The Incredibles.
The others in the catagory were just drek.
So for me, for 2004:
#1 The Incedibles
#2 GitS 2: Innocence
#3 Appleseed (legal region 1 DVD out in May)
ObCOH: Stan informed us of the win by chat in CoH. Which, I suppose, is appropriate.
