I find it profoundly disturbing that, with an origin date of 1970, the “How Many Licks Does It Take to Get to the Center of a Tootsie Pop?” commercial, which is still being aired, is older than some of my grown-up friends.
And Mr. Owl is a real jerk.
And I can still quote it in its entirety, right down to a decent Paul Winchell imitation.
Incidentally, I saw an updated version of this commercial a few years ago, starring a CG dragon. It didn’t work for me.
How many seconds until I throw up?
Let’s find out.

Crunch.
Three.
For some reason 1970s commercials still stick. “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!” “I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner” “Takes a licking but keeps on ticking.”
My favorite commercial from the 70s is for Alka-Seltzer. “Mama mia, that’s-a spicy meatball!”
But the difference here is that Tootsie Pop continues to run the commercials. Alka-Seltzer doesn’t run the “Whole Thing”/”Mama Mia” ads. Oscar Meyer resurrects the song now and again, but with new ads. The “He likes it, hey, Mikey” ad gets remade now and again. But only Tootsie reruns the original.
