When I was a kid my sister was a soda jerk at Pearson’s drug store in Iowa City. She was really good to her little brother:
PEARSON’S CHOCOLATE SODA
– Start with large, chilled soda glass
– Generous shot of chocolate syrup
– 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
> blend on milkshake spindle
– 6 ounces soda water
> stir gently with long spoon
– 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
– and what the hell, a little more chocolate syrup
> insert large-diameter straw and long spoon
> serve to appreciative little brother
Of course, that last step can be changed to adapt to circumstances
Yeah, ice cream and carbonation CAN go together!

Well, heck, for that matter a good root beer float qualifies, too.
Mmmmmmm … a good root beer float …
