I am still desperately behind on comics reading from being away on business trips and the holidays. The subject came up with Aaron the other day what other “great” titles I’m reading.
Here’s the “bottom” third of my box, with 1.5 months of comics in it, with the idea that farther down the list is better (i.e., saving the best for last). Since it’s such a long interval, this probably covers most of the best comics titles I’m reading right now:
Teen Titans
Runaways
Outsiders
Penny Arcade
Captain America
Spider-Woman: Origin
Conan
Daredevil
New Avengers
X-Factor
Ultimates
Amazing Spider-Man
Powers
Strangers in Paradise
Fantastic Four
Supreme Powers: Hyperion
Fables
Book of Lost Souls
Planetary
PvP
Make of all that what you will.
I’ve got the latest trade of Marvel’s Conan stories, vols 6 & 7 of Queen and Country, the third volume of the Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom Archives, and DC’s The Best of the Spirit collection.
Every night I look at the stack of comics on my reading table and then at my daughter sleeping in her co-sleeper, and I wonder if tonight’s the night I’m going to find thirty minutes to start one of those books. And every night, I find myself giving her a bottle while my wife catches up on some much-needed sleep.
Maybe I should be reading the Conans to her – Naomi’s first words could be “By Crom!”
(By the way, I’m curious about the Fables title. Is it worth checking out the first collection?)
I did forget to list the trades I have at the bottom of the box. And, hmmm, that includes some Knights of the Dinner Table.
I would recommend Fables to anyone. Brilliant stuff; it helps demonstrate why Willingham has sort of been given the regency over the Gaimanverse at DC/Vertigo. Yes, please check out the first collection.
Fable is supposed to be amazing. Seen a few issues on their own, need to get the trades myself.
Steve, have you been picking up the trade collections of the old Conan comic or the new one that started coming out about a year ago I think?
I have the first few trades of the old Conan comic, been meaning to look for a trade of the new one since I think it began with ‘The Frost Giant’s Daughter’ which was always a fun story and the sample art I saw for it ages back was great.
Hythian, Yup, I’ve been picking up the trades of the old Conan run by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith/John Buscema. Those were some of my favourite comics as a kid.
I haven’t yet looked at the new stuff put out by Dark Horse, but I’m tempted to look at the P. Craig Russell series, Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur.
I owned (still own) some of the old comics, as well as some of the big Savage Sword of Conan b&w mags that Marvel put out for a while. Great stuff.
That said, the new Conan series from DH is also great — Busiek approaches the story as a labor of love, and Cary Nord’s art reminds me a bit of a Frazetta sketch book. There are some trades out, and they’re worth the investment, too.
(The P. Craig Russell mini was okay — not bad, and certainly a treat to look at, but only so-so, storywise.)
My brother and I used to be huge Conan the King/King Conan fans, so, for his birthday a couple of years ago, I found him a complete run of the series, with strict instructions that he had to share [grin].
Yeah, I have the first three collected volumes of the classic Marvel series that have been re-released. Nine of them are out now, the 10th “When Giants Walk The Earth and Other Stories” should be out in March.
Busiek’s run for Dark Horse has two trades out so far, of which I have neither but I have peeked at the preview art and it looks nice. So far “The Frost Giant’s Daughter and Other Stories” and “The God in the Bowl and Other Stories” are the two that are out, with “The Tower of the Elephant and Other Stories” coming in hardbound in May and trade paperback in June.
Always been a big fan of the Conan books since they were such goofy trashy little things. Like male romance novels, just with more gratutious violence and a few less bodice-ripping love scenes.
