Paramount has announced the director (J.J. Abrams) and release date (Christmas 2008) for the next Star Trek movie. The movie is supposed to harken back to the early days of the Kirk era. The lead roles haven’t been formally cast, but …

IGN reported yesterday that Paramount was eyeing Matt Damon, Adrien Brody and Gary Sinise for the key roles of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy, respectively. With a director and start date now set, we’ll soon know for certain who will play the Big Three.

I do like the logo/poster. Very classic.

  1. Gary Sinise as a younger Dr. McCoy: I can actually see that. Damon as a young Kirk: quite possibly. Adrian Brody as Spock: Not so sure about that, although he has the right kind of slightly ethereal bone structure.

  2. I don’t envy whoever ends up in the roles of these iconic characters. How to bring something fresh, while still having a tie to the original. If pulled off, it would be spectacular. If not, we’ll either end up with an unintentional parody, or something guaranteed to torque off every fan of the original.

  3. I don’t know about this one. I really like Abrams (and am really excited about the announcement that he has the rights to do King’s Dark Tower) but I agree with you, Dave, this is a casting nightmare.

Anyone he puts in the Kirk or Spock roles needs to be a relative unknown. Damon has too much baggage and I just don’t think people will except him as Kirk. Now Sinese as McCoy, that I can see.

(and maybe David Tennant, an actual Scott, as Scotty?)

  4. David Tennant as Scotty? Fantastic.

(James Doohan, of course, had no actual accent, and in fact auditioned with a variety of accents> Scotty as German …)

See, I think Matt Damon could be accepted — by the general public, at least — as Kirk. Whether the fanbase will accept him, though, is another question.
