Good news from EPCOT that, as of this summer, the Giant Wand at the Spaceship Earth Pavilion Geosphere will be gone, returning it to the way it originally looked. Huzzah.
Word came through this morning that, after seven long years of desecrating the glorious Spaceship Earth geosphere at Epcot Center, the 257 foot tall Mickey arm and wand will indeed be coming down. Work starts this Monday, July 9th, and will be complete by Epcot’s 25th anninversary in October.
Jim Macfee, Epcot’s Vice President, noted, “We think the timing of the removal is right.”
Now, I generally agree with most of what the Re-Imagineering folks write — but I confess I have a special love for the “EPCOT Cemetery” (a/k/a “Leave a Legacy“) (and am sad to hear they are no longer selling new picture plaques — though pleased that Kitten got one of the last).
Despite that quibble (and not really objecting to the Mickey Hat at Disney-MGM), I whole-heartedly agree with them that the giant Mickey arm and wand were pointless and ugly. I am glad they are going.
More on the wand’s departure. Apparently the new sponsor of Spaceship Earth, Siemens, wasn’t happy with the extra decor. Yay.
