An actually not-very-silly, but quite nice, AV Club interview with John Cleese.

AVC: Do you think The Life Of Brian is the best of the Monty Python films?

JC: Yes, I do. And it’s very interesting, because there’s a big difference of opinion between the English and the Americans. The Americans all love The Holy Grail, and the English all love Life Of Brian, and I’m afraid on this one, I side with the English. I think that the first 45 or 50 minutes of Holy Grail is terrific. Really, really good. I’m very proud of it. But then I think in the middle, there’s a scene with a three-headed giant that I think is always weaker than anything else. And I think that some of the sequences in the middle are not as strong. And then the ending—we sort of get away with the ending, but I don’t think the ending is great. Whereas I do think that Life Of Brian—there’s about two points when the story just sort of jumps the rails. The way Brian falls out of a house that’s being searched by the centurions, and lands, and has to start pretending that he’s delivering sermons, or prophecies—that’s not done well. And I think there’s one other one, but otherwise, as a story, it works much better than anything else the Pythons ever did. The jokes are terrific, and it’s about something really important.

It’s an expanded version of the interview in this week’s Onion.

And don’t miss The knights who say “nerd”: 20 pop-cultural obsessions even geekier than Monty Python.

  1. Huh. Of the 20 obsessions, I only qualify for #1 (Star Trek), and even that’s iffy now that there are no series and I stopped buying/reading the books years ago.

  2. Depending on the level of obsession posited, I could arguably qualify for 7, have dabbled (or at least participated once) in 4 more, and really have never gotten the point of the remaining 9.

(Avo, I’d say that CoX and LotRO qualify under the WoW category.)

  3. It sounded to me as if they were specifically singling out WoW itself, rather than just any old MMO, probably because that’s the one true MMO obsession that’s swept the geek world.

I used to play a little MTG (#10), but not in the last 8+ years.

  4. Star Trek

Did Fantasy Football at the Flats, winning one year, and usually in the play-offs every year I was in. Ran it one year and put it on-line for everyone to do trades and such.

    BSG! Love the new one.

Rocky Horror! I use to be able to recite the Responses to the entire movie from memory.

    Joss is my master now…

Media-specific role-playing. Well, ran a Dr. Who RPG once long ago and have been in a short Fire-Fly RPG…

Play some WoW….but I will assume that they mean all MMORPG’s.

Still love the Simpsons and watch in reruns.

Dr. Who! I still remember the Game where MK and I did many clues using nothing but Dr. Who references. ;P

Not a complete Zappa Geek, but I do love his stuff, though I am shoicked that Weird Al is not on the list.

    Anime! Geek!

So, 10 out of 20, not bad. ;P
