What to do if you are inadvertently transported to AD 1000.

I suspect learning to enjoy dysentry and/or being burned at the stake as a heretic would be most useful, but some interesting suggestions from the commenters….

  1. I would hope to make out as well as Conrad Stargard in Leo Frankowski’s Cross-Time Engineer series – he effectively unites Poland and stops the Mongol invasion thanks to some timely inventions, like steamboats and the Boy Scouts.

  2. Wow, a person would be really screwed in this scenario! People forget that even ‘known’ languages are foreign that far back, with regional accents amounting to full seperate dialects. No thanks!

  3. Oddly enough, I was going on about the same subject, more or less, on that day. Since that is the plot, more or less, to A Connecticut Yankee in Sir Arthur’s Court. I’d aim for The Factory/assembly line. Adam Smith suggested some pretty low hanging fruit as examples in The Wealth of Nations, that such a setup would really help with. Pins, for starters. Find a blacksmith. Get him to make a pin. Figure out what he did. And take his process into a good 30 good for nothings, and then sell the pins. The hard part would be convincing people to help make pins. I would work on the selling pins part, to nobles, and anyone who sewed.
