BoingBoing asks if readers recognize where this switch-inside-of-a-Shakespeare-bust is from, “and hence why the makers believe they can get $315 a copy.”
Okay, I know precisely where it’s from*, and while I wouldn’t pay $315, I probably would pay a substantial fraction of that, if I could think of something clever to use it for. Keen.
*And, at a guess, I’m certain at least two of my readers do, too.
I, of course, am one of the two.
Does it come with a glowing, beeping phone?
…Ah. Just followed the link. No phone.
You can add me to that list. Right now, the geekiest TV item I own that isn’t an action figure is the brass monkey bookend from Wonderfalls. It doesn’t talk, as in the show, but sometimes I do the voice to get a laugh out of Dina.
Me three. And my husband does too.
Darn it, we already have a garage door opener.
Geek items: pewter figures of Kosh and of a Shadow vessel, assorted Highlander sword letter openers, pens, and jewelry, and… a Lava Lamp(TM) that doubles as a containment vessel for captured juvenile Goa’uld.
Hrm. They’ve had one of these on the counter of our local sci-fi/comics shop for a long time. I wonder why this is “new”? Maybe the one in the store doesn’t actually power anything. I never did more than open it once to look at it.
I did find reference that someone else was selling them at one point (there was an Amazon marketplace link, now no longer active), so I suspect it’s not new-new.
I’m gratified that so many folks recognized the item. I was going to include a link to it being “in use,” but couldn’t find a Google image of it.
Most of my geeky items are action figures (including a Lego Superman and a several-inches-tall Hellboy; there’s an Obama action figure in there, too), a sculpture of Golden Age Flash, and various SF rockets (a very small set of B5 vessels, and a Serenity (ostensibly a Christmas ornament, but probably too large for that; it’s on its own stand).
All this stuff is at my office.
And, yes, Scott, you were definitely one of the definite two.
How can anyone NOT know what classic TV series this is from? I wonder of Adam West owns one?
I know of at least one person who had a sense of the era that it came from, but didn’t recall the specific show.
That said, my mom called me up this morning and asked if it was too late to have one shipped for Christmas. She went on to explain she wanted me to give one to her. Though she was disappointed that the red phone was a separate purchase.
George commented (on an inadvertent duplicate of the post): “I don’t remember where it’s from, but ideally when tripped, it should cause a huge bookcase to glide silently out of the way to provide access to your secret lair.”
Very close. Very, very close.
It’s not the $315 that will break you- it’s having to install a cave full of “wonderful toys” (yes, I know, wrong incarnation- to you I say “So what?”)
IF one DOESN”T know where this is from they’re either too young (get off my lawn you darn kids!), or too insufferable a comics purist to be suffered among civilized folk.
I have many Star Wars Lego items at work, but my prized possession is a Kevin Matchstick action figure (still in the package!) . .my IRL name is Kevin, so having a superhero named Kevin was one of my geekiest joys in college.
Ah, Kevin Matchstick. I was a huge Mage fan.
Vague memories from childhood tell me that it has something to do with the words “BLAM”, “WHAMMO” and “KA-POW”, but then again I was younger than Kitten is currently, so…
Your memories serve you well, Grasshopper.
I LOVED the Batman show. Painful to watch now but at age 9-11 it was bat-tastic.
So I scored my 2-for-2 (Avo and Randy). I’m gratified there were so many others. 🙂
