Based on this review, Picked up a copy of this and am slowly working through it (slowly in terms of time allocated, not difficulty). It looks to have some good, simple mechanics, with both dice and a flexible skill set, and the setting (based on the ongoing comic series) is one that I think will work out nicely for Family Game Night (or perhaps something even broader).

More as I get deeper into it.

  1. I saw that in a local comic shop recently (unfortunately, it was the shop that *seals* every book in the shop to prevent browsing). It’s based on The Burning Wheel, which I own and have read, but never played.

If you enjoy the Mouse Guard mechanics – especially the character creation/motivation/advancement system – then I’d highly recommenced The Burning Wheel for more traditional high fantasy, or Burning Empires for “apocalyptic techno-fantasy”

  2. I’ve been meaning to get it and run it as one of our ‘test’ games, as it’s a lite version of Burning Wheel, which I’ve gotten but which requires a little more learning time commitment than folks are ready for at this time.

… which is to say it makes DnD of any edition look like baby aspirin.

  3. Heh.

Well, so far, most of the mechanics I’ve seen have been pretty reasonable … a scosh complex in places, but with some nice, soft, character narrative stuff to accompany the crunchier parts.

I described the setting to Katherine last night, and she seemed enthused.
