So this morning, after we were all up and in the cheery light of morning, we told Katherine about what was going on with Mist — that he was sick with a disease (we talked later about cancer), that he wouldn’t be getting better, that he would be die, and that what was most important was that we show him love and that he not be in pain or unhappy. We talked about the medicine we had for him — for the other infection in his mouth, as well as the pain killers, but that eventually the pain killers wouldn’t be enough, and we’d have to make a decision at that time.
And she got it. And went from serious, to tearful (not the only one), to wanting to go pet the kitty.
And we did some hugs, and talked about being sad, but also had some laughter and all that good stuff.
And that’s life right now. She’s had some follow-up questions about what cancer is, about commercials she’s heard about “preventing cancer” and why that can’t help, and she’s been very affectionate toward Mist, and occasionally teary, but she and we appear to be coping for the moment.
So that’s how that went.

She noted that even though it was sad when we lost Sugar, she’d only been around for a month or so, while Mist she’d known her whole life. She said a very nice prayer for him (that she hoped he’d be happy during his last days with us). We talked a bit about how to have good dreams, and then she went right to sleep.
