Battlestar Galactica count-down

Watched the previous three eps of BSG this afternoon in sequence, whilst working furiously on a report for work. No, really.

What are we down to — two final episodes?

On the one hand, that’s clear. Major pieces of plot, sub-plot, character arc, and equipment are grinding to a painful, broken conclusion. There is an approaching sense of finality looming on the horizon.

On the other hand, things aren’t slowing down. Each secret that gets peeled back reveals more gaping mystery behind. Each final-go-for-broke action seems to trigger changes that themselves cry out for resolution. Nobody seems to be where they are headed, wherever that’s going to be.

It’s hard to imagine how they’re going to wrap this up in two. And even with a two-part episode title of “Daybreak,” how it’s can end well for much of anyone.

(Taps toe on ground impatiently.)

  1. Yeah, Kim and I are wondering how in the heck this is going to end well for anyone. I’m not complaining, mind you, but if the end reveals them to have been in a Cylon-projection like Boomer’s house the whole time, and that they’re actually on the real Earth, I’ll be…well, not happy. Disappointed, maybe.

    But it’s GOOD.

  2. My predictions:

Boomer 6 is finally killed by Cavil…

    Or…

She kills Cavil and returns to the fleet where she is Killed by Athena 6.

The Galactica becomes a greater liabilty then a positive and they move to the Base Star.

Starbuck turns out to be a Hybrid daughter of a Tigh/Ellen paring and was rezed by a still functioning hidden rez ship near “earth”.

  3. Arty — yeah, I agree, a Bobby-in-the-Shower scene would not go over well. (I could forgive it in Newhart. I never did forgive it with St Elsewhere.)

BD, not to say that parts of that won’t come true (I suspect Boomer is not long for this world, given that pretty much everyone now has a reason to kill her), but those are all pretty much peripheral issues, really. Even the fate of Galactica seems sealed (or unsealed) and, ultimately, not what’s important.

The question is — does the quest for the “shining planet” finally end, and, if so, how? I think it has to, to provide any sort of closure, but the shape of that, aside from it depending on Hera and Starbuck in some fashion, remains very neatly shrouded.

  4. I loved the ending of Newhart, but that’s probably because I didn’t care for the show but was a big fan of The Bob Newhart Show.

As for how BG will end… Well, you remember what happened when they found Earth in the original series, right?

    Galactica 2010, anybody? 😉

  5. Flying motorcycles! Booyah!

The end of _Newhart_ worked because absurdity was part of the show, and it paid homage to Bob’s earlier (and, I agree, better) incarnation.

More serious shows, which call for intellectual and emotional investment from the viewer — “take this seriously, because it is serious stuff” — that sort of tactic works less well, esp. since it appears to often be a matter of weak writing. “Everything you know is wrong” is a fine, venerable, and dangerous plot twist in the middle of the story. At the end of the story, it’s difficult to excuse.
