Not so Fantastic

Okay, I wasn’t wowed by the Fantastic Four movies, but … jeez, people, a reboot this quickly?

With Daredevil already getting the once over and Planet of the Apes also in the running for a new start with a prequel in the works Fantastic Four is joining the reboot gang.

The two films previously released never really caught on with the fans and the studio is reportedly looking to completely retool, recast and recrew the franchise. This means no Tim Story, no Iaon, no Julian (thank the maker, he never sat well with me as Dr. Doom), no Chris, no Chiklis and no Jessica.

The first Fantastic Four in 2005 pulled in over $330 million worldwide and the second film, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, opened in 2007 with a total box office take of $290 million. Both made money and were commercial successes but the reviews were lackluster and the fan reaction was mediocre.

If something gets remade within 5 years … there’s something really wrong with Hollywood. And it’s not like these movies tanked — $330m and $290m respectively isn’t quite “never caught on with the fans.”

  1. Well, I personally hated the first one so much I never saw the second. Doom mutated into a metal man with Magneto’s powers? Pshaw.

  2. I never saw the second, either (and only saw the first while on travel). I’m just a bit amazed that they’re rebooting things so quickly — though certainly “continuity” doesn’t seem to be much of Marvel’s vocabulary these days.

  3. Doctor doom is my favorite comic book character. i forced myself to watch the first FF movie, but could only take about 20 minutes of it at a time. I have yet to see Galactus as a cloud. >_<

  4. Me, neither — though the Ultimate Marvel version was cloudy, too. Perhaps a bit more plausible than a giant purple guy with a “G” on his belt buckle, but …

  5. I liked the 2nd one a lot better than the first. They did fairly good job with the Silver Surfer (not quite as trippy as the original, but still), and Galactus as a cloud didn’t really bother me that much. The cast of the Four was really pretty good, and the Thing and Johnny were much better in the 2nd movie. The problem was that neither story was all that great, and the portrayal of Doom was AWFUL. He’s he only thing they need to re-boot.
