You know, for all the dread that folks lived under in the 50s and 60s, with the threat of world-ending nuclear war, you’d think that the GOP would be a bit more sensitive about bandying about “going nuclear” and “all-out, total war” when it comes to political wrangling in Washington.
It seems either wildly trivializing of something awful (consider how “There’s going to be a Holocaust on the Senate floor” or “We’re going to go all Rwanda on the other side” or “We’re going to crucify them out there” would sound) or just childish (i.e., “Hey, look at the huge size of my … metaphor!”).
Or maybe it’s just dread over being out of (elected) power conjuring up fears from the past. Except that they’ve been using “going nuclear” as a phrase for many years.
Dave?
It’s because:
It’s Okay If You’re A Republican (IOKIYAR).
No matter what you say or what you do it is okay if you say of do something that is rhetorically over the top, incendiary, or just plain wrong. Because no matter what, the press still loves you and the only people in the Media that are even going make note of it are Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert…and they do not matter since no one pays attention to them anyways.
Would you be more comfortable if they used phrases like the following?
“It’s time to use the Genesis Device on them.”
“Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station.”
“We need to drop them into the Crack of Doom.”
I would so watch CSPAN if they did that!
Avocet, is it wrong that your #3 summons images of Larry Craig?
