- A Strategic Stumble Saved America – It’s still more complex than that. Much of the anti-intellectualism of the fundamentalist movement stemmed from interdenominational efforts starting around the Civil War. Christian denominations played down their theological differences (which once had provoked bloodshed) in favor of cooperative ventures. That meant that there wasn’t much to teach about in schools, there wasn’t much interest or need for theological sermons, and Christianity moved into state where it was easy to separate the sacred from the secular.
