Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- How Yahoo, Facebook, Amazon & Google Think About Big Data – Petabyte-scale storage strategies. Jeez …
- BBC NEWS | Health | Healthcare around the world – Yeah, but remember, the US only has the bad numbers because of ILLEGAL ALIENS and IF WE JUST GOT RID OF THEM, EVERYTHING WOULD BE COOL AND EVERYONE WOULD SEE WE HAVE THE BEST SYSTEM EVAH!
- On being treated in the UK vs. the US – Yeah, but it’s SOCIALIST, so it must be evil.
- Paul Krugman: These People are Unappeasable – Yeah. I think it’s time to cue the Passion and Outrage and make it clear that folks who are just out to say “No, and Hell No if it’s going to make the Other Side Look Good” are going to be pushed to the margins to the extent possible. That’s not a good thing, but otherwise they’re the ones being put in de facto charge, and that’s even less good.
- The worst health care reform ever? – Okay, this reform would be worse than our status quo. I think.
- So Sad We All – Still shaking my head over this movie announcement …
- Wonk Room » Deconstructing Frank Luntz’s Obstructionist Health Care Reform Memo – “But that’s the major problem with Luntz’s memo: it tries to obstruct health reform by ignoring what Obama is actually offering.” But if that’s how the Right can frame debate, then they can win, regardless of what the real issues are. That’s the threat here of “the Big Lie.”
- Iglesias: “I Feel One Hundred Percent Vindicated” – The truth is sweet.
- Weekend Diversion: How to Argue [Starts With A Bang] – Nice pyramid. Maybe we can get the FDA to get companies to post this on their cereal boxes rather than the food pyramid. Probably be better for the country.
- George W. Bush’s legacy in a pie chart – “Yeah … well … um … Obama’s a Socialist! So there!”
- No Bucks, No Buck Rogers – Color me shocked.
- Google Points At WebFinger. Your Gmail Address Could Soon Be Your ID. – A lot of potential here — I’m not sure it’s needed, but if we’re going to have it, then, yes, I’d like my Google account set up with it.
- Outrage and Art – I think a lot of the question depends on how “out of their way” the person in question goes to make their otherwise odious (to me) position known. If it becomes impossible to read the story (or see the movie, etc.) without association with the negative, then that’s a bad thing, and usually (not always) the fault of the artist/creator. The fact is, of course, that everyone, all of our heroes, have feet with more or less clay content — racism, anti-Semitism, gay-bashing, mysogyny — and the further back in history you go, the more that’s just part of the culture. For modern-day art figures (including folks in sports) … it remains a tough call indeed.
- An Apparently Confused Bryan Singer to Remake Battlestar Galactica – I can’t think of any plausible or credible reason for any of these scenarios. Except, maybe, for money and ego.
- G.I. Joe: The Rise of Tenuous Merchandising – Y’know, I remember the friendly and assuring pictures of Peter Norton, arms crossed, watching benevolently over your computer.

Well, the new BSG will get rid of the Deus Ex Machina, and that will be a great bonus.
Just doesn’t make any sense right now. I mean, if Moore & Co. had made a huge break with the original BSG continuity, that’d be one thing. But the trappings and the names are all there. Trying to create a different parallel branch of Apollo, Starbuck (a guy again?), Adama, etc., is just … weird.
