Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Is Bill Maher really that ignorant? (part IV): Bill loves him some cancer quackery [Respectful Insolence] – Thus demonstrating a few things: (1) The “rationalists” don’t beatify anyone; if you say stupid stuff, it doesn’t matter how popular you are in other areas, you’ll be called on the stupid stuff you say. (2) People, even usually interesting, intelligent, important people do, in fact, have irrational or poorly-considered view. Cults of personality are inevitably doomed to self-destruction or self-deception.
- Project Indect and the “automatic detection” of “abnormal behaviour or violence” – Hmmmm … computers that detect, report on, and perhaps take other actions to stop abnormal or violent human behavior. Yeah, nothing could possibly go wrong there …
- A mysterious series for H.G. Wells: A Googler
- Obama on the public option: ‘I absolutely do not believe that it’s dead.’ – Even Obama gets it: “You know, I’d love to get Republican votes, but I don’t count on them. … I think, that the opposition has made a decision. They are just not going to support anything, for political reasons.”
- Backed Into A Corner, Boehner Admits That Obama Is Not A Socialist – That’s because the word, as being currently used, is no longer descriptive, but an epithet. They might as well be calling him a “monster” or a “pirate” or a “really creepy guy” for all that it actually is meant to impart information rather than trigger emotion.
- Harry Jackson to Religious Right activists: Please stop sounding like racists: Peter
- LED Jumper Cables from the future – That’s very clever.
- The Texas Social Studies Standards Are Flakier Than The Science Standards « Afarensis: Anthropology, Evolution, and Science – I’d be curious as to how many folks get booted from coverage in their history books are women, ethnic/racial minorities, etc. While these sorts of judgment calls are a constant in history studies, these are so blatantly ideological in nature as to take one’s breath away. If it were just Texas being affected, I might just shrug, but these standards will, though promulgated in Texas, influence the textbooks available in the entire US.

“HAL, let me into the garage.”
“I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that, your driving profile indicates you’re a hazard to those around you.”
*facepalm*
