Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- EFF Submits Brief in Key State Secrets Privilege Case – Um … asserting executive power that cannot be reviewed or checked by the other branches seems, um, kinda tyrannical to me. Alas, neither party’s executives can claim moral high ground here.
- Brian Frederick: For Hannity and Fox News, 1,500 people = “massive rally”: Brian Frederick
- Eric Boehlert: Breitbart’s Big Government concedes ACORN broke no laws – “Why won’t Breitbart, in the name of transparency and full disclosure, force his undercover video makers to post all their ACORN film online, unedited? What is Breitbart hiding? And why won’t he detail how much of the ACORN tapes were edited and doctored?” Because, frankly, he has nothing to gain from doing so. He’s already ginned up all the controversy and “win” he needs.
- Jamison Foser: Howard Kurtz: Clueless or dishonest? – It may be that GOP sex scandals ring more loudly because the hypocrisy involved (as self-appointed defenders of “family values”) tends to be greater. Or it may be that GOP sex scandals, because they are kept as such deep, guilty secrets, explode more luridly.
- Jamison Foser: Washington Post , please define “moderate”: Jamison Foser
- Beck in trouble with Fox News for his paid endorsement of gold company. – Lordy, if you’re getting in ethics trouble with Fox News, you know you’re getting in ethics trouble.
- Inhofe’s Hoax: Senator Distorts Meteorological Study To Show Support For His Global Warming Denial: Alex Seitz-Wald
- Fox fudges poll numbers to claim 120 percent of the public believes scientists falsify global warming data. – Do Fox & Friends falsify poll results to support their own talking points? 120% say it's very likely.
- Terry Kicks Off Anti-Communion Tour – Wow. Y’know, I suspect some Bishops might not appreciate Terry publicly instructing them on what they should or should not do. It will be interesting if that causes him some problems.
- Putting “Christ” In Your Christmas Tree. Literally. – I’m amused how the old pagan Yule Tree has become a core Christian religious symbol. Christianity has certainly co-opted holidays and holy figures, but the way the Christmas tree has, as part of the “War on Christmas,” suddenly become a sacred image is … weird. Especially since it militates against using it for civic purposes.
- Intel Will Buy nVIDIA – It would certainly even up the playing field, product-wise; without their current GPU effort and with nVidia choking and with AMD having bought ATI — I don’t think Intel can afford not to.
- Accepting Friend Requests from People You Don’t Know Is a Recipe for ID Theft [Security]: Adam Pash
- My Rules for the Internet (and other things) – As noted, a lot of this applies to the Meatverse as well. Except for #4, maybe. Anyway, all excellent “rules.”
- The World Won’t Actually Stop and Melt With Us – Foreign Policy is important. Unfortunately, too much of ours (in terms of heads and cycles and money) is focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, bowing incidents notwithstanding.
- News Hounds: Ruh-Roh! Fox News Shop Advertises “Holiday Must Haves” – They used the forbidden “H” word! Burn them!
- OMG!!! Scientists use jargon in private emails, and get annoyed at nitwits who jump to conclusions!? – It appears many non-scientists have never used the phrase “the trick to doing this is” or “that’ll do the trick,” and thus don’t realize that “trick” doesn’t just reference deception and misdirection, but also a clever way of doing things. Duh.
- Unassisted home births – While I concur that many hospitals do a less-than-optimal job on the whole birthing thing, I’d be reluctant too give birth at home without even a midwife. Yes, people have done it for eons. But, yes, lots of kids have died of complications at birth for eons, too.
- Crested Birds – 2009-12-01: Rob Balder
- December 07, 2009 – “Where’s Mama?” Snort.
