So, today, as Cookie Dad for Kay’s Girl Scout Troop, I participated in the first (of three) “booth sales” at the local King Soopers supermarket, from Noon to 3 p.m.
A few observations.
- Most people who encountered us and our sales pitch to buy cookies were happy and pleasant about it. Those who chose not to, generally cited a plethora of other GS cookies in their lives — kids, grandkids, the office, neighbors. The other few simply ignored us.
- Sales were pretty good, though I’d guess about half the people who said they’d buy cookies on their way out of the store did not, in fact, do so.
- Three hours is a long stint for 4th-5th Graders.
- I probably overplanned for the whole extravaganza. But I was there both as a parent-volunteer and as the Troop Cookie Manager, so I figured being overly-concerned with process and so forth was to the good.
- We sold 130 boxes of cookies over the three hours.
Tomorrow I need to start the delicate juggling between (a) cookies we’ve ordered, (b) cookies ordered by girls subsequent to the initial order, (c) cookies for the next two booth sales, (d) cookies we still have on hand, (e) ending up with a minimal number of extra cookies that someone (coughmecough) has to pay for.
Riding herd on three 4th-5th Graders, taking money / giving change, and tallying cookies sales — it’s not an impossible task, but it’s not exactly what I’m aiming for in my Saturday afternoons. On the other hand, I can think of worse pastimes.
