Unblogged Bits for Sat, 6 Mar 2010, 7:00PM

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. This Is What It Looks Like When Right-Wing Activists Run For Public Office – So rather than being able to demonstrate clear judgment, jurisprudential experience, and a strong legal background — this guy just gets up and promises he’ll follow through through his conservative activist ideology of pro-life, property rights, gun ownership rights, etc. (while promising not to be a “*judicial* activist”). Outstanding, Texas. If you elect this yahoo, you deserve what he’ll do to your state.
  2. Under fire, judge clarifies ruling criticizing death penalty | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle – My objection to the death penalty is not that the state has the right to use it, but that it is used so poorly that innocents are executed, which is what the judge in this case basically said. The comments are an appropriate selection of appalling attacks on the judge as a Democrat who wants the people of Houston to be killed by roving bands of criminals who are set free (?) because they couldn’t be executed.
  3. Big donor stops giving to RNC over leaked fundraising doc attacking Pelosi, Reid, Obama – “Shameful, immature and uncivil, at best” — that sounds like the efforts of the GOP, all right.
  4. Glenn Beck spreading Christian nationalist lies to advance theocratic agenda – Does this really shock anyone?
  5. Canadian Money to become Plastic, Coins will be Steel Next Year – Interesting. OTOH, most of the money I spend any more is, in fact, “plastic” already.
  6. Most teens don’t stop to think about tattoo-removal risks – This is probably (aside from my needle phobia) I’ll never get a tattoo — I cannot think of any design that I’d never, ever, never want to have removed. When I think of tattoos I might have gotten ten, twenty, thirty years ago … I cringe with averted embarrassment.
  7. When Is A Pool Not A Pool? When It’s Got A HydroFloor. – Probably very expensive … and very worth it if you need to have an indoor pool.
  8. Like Playing Monopoly With Squatters – A very fun article (thanks, Doyce) on why, to me, RPGing is so much fun. It’s not just about being with friends, or just about playing an elvish ranger with authority issues … it’s about the synergy and feedback between the two at the same time.
  9. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that some very smart people just don’t know how the web and browsers work [Christina’s LIS Rant] – This is actually fascinating — a result of browser customization, “convenience” features, and (expected) ignorance. People who drive a car generally don’t know anything other than the controls they need to work it (for better or worse). Ditto with browsers and accessing the web.
  10. 30 Minimal Logo Designs that Say More with Less – These are quite nice.
  11. Flu deaths in children [Effect Measure] – For those who think it was all a big to-do about nothing …
  12. Catalyst could power homes on a bottle of water, produce hydrogen on-site (w/ Video) – That would be pretty darned remarkable.
  13. Ophidian – Lovely.
  14. Help Desk – There have been days …
  15. Penny wise – A very cool science lesson.
  16. Mitt Romney Refuses To Say If The Foundation Of The Massachusetts Health System Is Constitutional – Again, the GOP shows they’ll attack something coming from the Dems that they, themselves (or at least some of them) support. Oppose them on principle and reason? That’s fine. Oppose them for the sake of opposition? You’re part of the problem, not part of the solution.
  17. Use A $5 Bill To Buy Five Detroit Houses – I have to imagine that … someday … the property at least will be worth more.
  18. Guess who’s behind an Indiana moral crusade? – Cui bono?
