Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- “What is a role-playing game?” – DORK TOWER, Wednesday, April 14, 2010
- Alas, Poor Jerry: Falwell Says The Mean Old Media Is Picking On Him « The Wall of Separation – Ah, playing the victim card … remarkable how many rich and powerful forces stoop to playing that.
- A tale of two failed plots – The system can work. Why the "law & order" Right is so willing to to disrespect the legal system (especially with proven successes like this) is indeed a puzzlement.
- ‘Referendum’ falls far short in special election – I think these “one-off” referendum claims are usually overblown — but I expect there will be dead silence about it from the Right’s pundits today.
- L’affaire Waltke – A very nice, detailed take-down of the RTS firing of a scholar for suggesting that evolution is real. “What RTS is arguing about the Bible, ultimately, is that people were made for the Sabbath — that humans must conform to what they say the text says. And if some rebel comes along, healing on the Sabbath and insubordinately teaching that they’re reading it wrong, that ‘the Sabbath was made for people and not people for the Sabbath’? Well, that sounds humanistic. And there’s nothing to do with insubordinate humanists like that except to hand them over to the Empire for punishment.”
- Disaster (Barely) Averted: Rick Green Loses Texas Supreme Court Run-Off – Texas managed to not completely go over the edge into lunacy … but it was a close call.
- Corporate Spending in Judicial Elections Skyrocketing – Welcome to “judicial activism,” Right-wing-style.
- Bob McDonnell vs. the Right to Vote – Money graf: “In a democracy, the right to vote should never depend on whether the governor finds you worthy of that right. It is not the place of government to make sure that only the ‘right’ type of people vote.”
- Hang this up in your time-machine… – Cue Sir Boss, the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court …
- Are airports ready for the three-hour rule? – USATODAY.com – I don’t think anyone doesn’t think it’s not going to be a mess at times to implement this. But if the airports are ready to deal with it, the airlines should stop their bitching and moaning, and start serving their customers.
- Hate Government and Taxes? — Married To The Sea, Apr 2010 – No, not seriously, though it’s certainly something to think about.
- Good Writers. Bad Men. Does It Matter? — Review — In Character, A Journal of Everyday Virtues by the John Templeton Foundation – Unlike airline engineers or dentists, artists (writers, actors) express themselves (and make use of their inner demons) in their work. That makes learning that creators have feet of clay more difficult to shrug off, rightly or wrongly. It affects their work, but, more importantly, it affects our perception of their creations because their creations are such a part of them, causes us to look for deeper meanings in the creations that may or may not enhance the experience. It’s a conundrum.
- The Curious Cook – Why Cilantro Tastes Like Soap, for Some – NYTimes.com – Cilantro isn’t one of my favorites, certainly not to excess, but I don’t find it particularly offputting, either. Tastes vary (quite literally, according to the article).
- Democrat Wins U.S. House Race in Florida – NYTimes.com – Since, if the GOP candidate had won it would have been called a huge mandate against Obama and the Dems, can we infer the reverse from the actual results? Mr Beck? Mr Limbaugh?
- Cosmic Operator – SMBC April 14, 2010 – Sure seems that’s the way it works, sometimes.
- VA Gov McDonnell Institutes Writing Test For Felons Seeking Voting Rights | TPMMuckraker – Might I suggest, then, that all potential voters, former (non-violent) felons or not, take a similar test, “an essay outlining their contributions to society”?
- How to piss off your nerdy friends – Heh.
