Unblogged Bits for Wed, 14 Apr 2010, 8:01PM

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. No One In This Post Was Raped – The Right (mostly) are doing more to devalue horrific words — “rape” and “Hitler” are two good examples — than a century of linguistic drift could do.
  2. Let’s Learn From History Before We’re Condemned To Repeat It – Lest we forget. “We can thank President Bill Clinton acting swiftly and reassuring the nation that 4/19 isn’t as well known as 9/11. Clinton did not use the terrorist act to scare the country or take us to war. He said in his address at the first memorial service that this was a singular act by individuals and that the nation was still safe. He did not use it to restrict constitutional rights or allow anyone to ramp up fears of white supremacist Christian military veterans. Among the accomplishments of the Clinton presidency, his reaction to the Oklahoma terrorism has to rank in the top 5 if not #1.”
  3. Hobby Lobby Just Wants To Share Craft Supplies And Christ With You – This is certainly their prerogative, esp. since nobody is actually required (by law or for health reasons) to go to Hobby Lobby. It’s also the prerogative of anyone who finds this offensive to take their business elsewhere.
  4. Bring Your Own Travel Mug To Starbucks Tomorrow For Free Coffee – Alas, I’ll be working from home tomorrrow (as I need to get up for a 2 a.m. call tomorrow morning).
  5. Google’s Insane Number of Servers Visualized – Servers – Gizmodo – Wow.
  6. On behalf of their Wall Street funders, GOPers launch misleading, distorted attack on Wall Street reform – It’s remarkable that they can get all their talking points and campaign funding from Wall Street, then turn around and claim that they are being tough on Wall Street by opposing this bill that Wall Street doesn’t want to see passed.
  7. Conservatives Liken Nuclear Summit Logo To Muslim Crescent Moon – OMG! IT’S A CIRCLE! WITH A PLANET! IT’S JUST LIKE THE FLAG OF PAKISTAN, IF YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES!
  8. Bachmann Tea Party Rally Cost Taxpayers $14,000: Alan
  9. Shenanigans: Genius Architect Has Plans to Turn Hollywood Sign Into a Hotel – Just don’t see this happening. Well, probably not. Hmmm. I suppose with the right pols on board, it could happen.
  10. Popular Veggie Burgers Contain Poisonous Chemicals – On the one hand, I’m both amused and outraged by this. On the other hand, while granting that chugging hexane is probably not a good idea, its presence doesn’t mean that this stuff is poisonous (or less healthy than, say, beef). More study needed.
  11. Twitter’s Entire Archive Headed to the Library of Congress – I think this is very, very cool. And, yeah, a lot of Twittering is pointless and shallow. So what? I, for one, would love to read some pointless, shallow chatter from, say, my great-grandparents.
  12. Google Chrome Ditches http:// in Address Bar – This hasn’t shown up in my copy of Chrome, but it makes a good deal of sense. 99.99% of people really don’t need to see “http://”.

  1. While I am very surprised that someone didn’t know that about Hobby Lobby and said they were offended by it (Heck that email probably made everyone at Hobby Lobby’s day), I am not surprised by the response.

Hobby Lobby is in the same catagory as Domino’s and Chick-fil-a.

    1. In the cast of Chik-fil-a, the primary impact is on their being closed on Sundays, and a slightly preachy (though not specifically religious that I recall) aspect to their kid meal bonuses. Doesn’t particularly bother me.

  2. Thought it may not be the goldmine we hope, twitter may replace some of the personal connections that have been lost through the end of letter writing. And the immediacy of tweets to events is amazing – just imagine the tweets of 9/11, both good and bad.
