Unblogged Bits (Sat. 22-May-10 0200)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Sam Brownback’s Pastor Problem: Evangelical Extremist Lou Engle – This guy makes Jeremiah Wright sound like Mister Rogers.
  2. Tom the Dancing Bug: Nate – Oil Spill – Haven't I seen this guy as a semi-regular on Fox & Friends?
  3. How Libertarian is Rand Paul? – Dude … when the Libertarians start saying you’re not one of their’s, either, you’re kind of in trouble.
  4. Pakistan gov. flips out over “Draw Mohammed Day,” blocks YouTube, Facebook, Twitter – Why does this strike me as the international equivalent of sticking one’s fingers in one’s ears and shouting “LA-LA-LA-I-CAN’T-HEAR-YOU”?
  5. It’s not just ’40-year old legislation’ – Money graf: “If the federal government can’t tell businesses what they can and cannot do, monopolies are fine, as is price-fixing. Food-safety regulations are objectionable, as are home-safety building codes. Where does Paul draw the lines drawn, exactly? It’s hard to say — the Kentucky Republican has drawn them in a radical way when it comes to racial discrimination and Americans with disabilities, and now he no longer wants to talk about the scope of his strange worldview.” What’s very interesting (and reason for all the traction the story is getting) is to what extent Paul is perhaps saying what other GOP pols believe — or are willing to go along with.
  6. An odd sense of entitlement – Wow. Rand Paul expects a “honeymoon” from the press for winning a primary. Yeesh.
  7. The party of civil rights – The GOP’s disingenuousness on this subject is disgusting. Yes, the majority of Republicans (and the majority of Democrats — and numerically more of them) voted for the Civil Rights Act. And, yes, without those GOP votes, the Act would not have passed. Then the party turned around, enacted the Southern Strategy, and welcomed in all those white Democratic racists to become Republicans. So while one might argue that the GOP of 1964 was a much more united party of civil rights, that says almost nothing about the GOP of 2010.
  8. The Oil Drum | What caused the Deepwater Horizon disaster? – A very interesting article from an oil drilling / engineering perspective, backed up by what sounds like a lot of very intelligent and OTJ expertise. Not pundits, not pols, not PR flacks, but drilling engineers who have a much better understanding of what happened (or could have happened) here.
  9. What This Candidate Knows About Puerto Rico Is Revealing – The Eye (CQ Politics) – Wow. What an asshat.
  10. Arizona senator behind SB-1070 plans next bill: ‘Target the mother’ by going after the ‘anchor baby racket.’ – Amazing how the Constitution is sacrosanct with these folks … except when it’s not. Also, remember the days when “wearing” an American flag would get you tossed in jail, or at least railed against by patriotic conservatives as disrespectful? State Sen. Pierce evidently does not.
  11. Would Jesus sign the Arizona immigration law? In a heartbeat – Bryan Fischer is, I believe, wrong. Jesus would speak of not doing wrong to those who have done wrong to you, to welcoming and sheltering the stranger, to feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. Yes, he would have compassion on those who have been wronged by criminals — but he would also sit down with those criminals and try to redeem them, not banish them. Nor would he tar the many illegals in the country working hard at marginal jobs and simply trying to feed themselves and their families with the brush of those criminals who are smuggling drugs and humans. In fact, what he most likely do would be to sit down and tell a parable about the Kingdom of Heaven and get people to focus less on what the government should do and more on what they should personally be doing. Yes, I strongly feel Bryan Fischer is completely off-base here.
  12. Cynthia Dunbar and her Prayers for Public Education – Your tax dollars at work (if you live in Texas).
