Unblogged Bits (Tue. 1-Jun-10 1401)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Secret of the crystal skull – Ah, this brings back all sorts of “Chariots of the Gods” memories for me …
  2. BP denies experts claims about additional leaks – And the reason we believe anything BP has to say right now is …?
  3. South African Newspaper Caves to Threats from Islamists : Dispatches from the Culture Wars – The irony here is sickeningly thick on the ground..
  4. Acupuncture works by inducing body’s own painkiller – Interesting stuff.
  5. To Obama Haters, He Went To the Wrong Cemetery, And It’s His Fault Memorial Day Speech Got Rained Out: Alan
  6. Norwegian Boy saves Sister from Moose Attack using World of Warcraft Skills – “A moose once bit my sister. No, really. … Mind you, moose bites can be really nasty.”
  7. Would-be judges on a mission from God – Gee — here I thought the Right was all about “judges are there to follow the law, not some ideological agenda.” Silly me.
  8. About that health care repeal push… – Surprisingly enough, the majority of folk are willing to give HCR a chance to see how it works. That’s extraordinarily pragmatic, but not surprising given that the status quo to which the “repeal it all” crowd are aspiring has so clearly failed.
  9. The success of the auto industry bailout: Steve Benen
  10. BP CEO Tony Hayward: ‘I’d Like My Life Back’ – Gee, Tony — I so feel for you that you’d “like your life back.” Perhaps another few million dollars from BP will make you feel all better.
  11. Herbal Supplement Sellers Dispense Dangerous Advice, False Claims – Snake-Oil Sam lives. But, of course, since we know that Science is Evil, buying products that are unscientific must mean that they’re good for you!
  12. A breakthrough cure for Ebola – Wow — very cool, if it pans out.
  13. The Gates of Hell Just Opened In Guatemala – Criminy!
  14. “Inhumane State Terror” – Even assuming that Israel’s story in this case is real, it points out tremendous ineptitude on the part of the IDF (folks onboard managed to disarm two commandos and turn their weapons back on them? they were driven off by sticks and knives? and they still managed to kill 20-odd civilians?). Plus it took place in international waters. Plus it’s regarding a blockade of an occupied territory that Israel has frequently (with provocation) used a similar sledge hammer approach on. Israel is either letting themselves be suckered into losing what little international support it has (including in the US), or it simply doesn’t care.
  15. 18 Hacked Digital Road Signs – At least one photoshopped in here, but still good fun.
  16. Woman sues Google after being hit by a car while using walking directions – See, this is why we can’t have any nice things …
  17. Google Switches Away from Windows (Mostly to Mac) Due to Security Concerns – Interesting.
  18. An outbreak of normal / Can you hear me now? 13 – People look for different things. Fire & brimstone may be right for some, but, I suspect, not most. Communities focused on that will lose a lot of converts, regardless of their (dis)beliefs.
