Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- 8 Countries With Fascinating Baby Naming Laws – There are times when I look at these restrictions and say, “That really seems like an unreasonable restriction on personal liberty.” Then I look at some of the names that were rejected and realize there are likely kids in the US who are saddled with those monikers.

- California lawmakers consider license plates that flash ads | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times – This is such an awful, dangerous, and goofy idea from so many angles, it’s hard to think of just one to point out — except to say that if you believe the state’s wireless license plate network will not be frequently (let alone never) hacked, you are living in someplace even zanier than California.
- McDonald’s Wants You To Come In For A Drink – To quote George: “By God, this is exactly what America needs: a more convenient way to gain weight and abuse our livers by combining High Fructose Corn Syrup with caffeine into a nice disposable plastic cup.”

And, yes, I’m sure the price went back up — but think of it: Safeway now clearly thinks this is a competitive advantage, and when you look at their 2Q ice cream on the shelf next to the sad little 1.75Q or 1.5Q cartons, it will be. (Safeway Select ice cream is also pretty darned good.)
- Watch Out For Tiny Fraudulent Charges On Your Accounts – Need to look into this more for myself.
- If You’re Looking For An Outdated, Barely Usable MP3 Player, Walmart’s Got You Covered – This is one reason why I don’t ask people to buy me electronics as a general category.
- Number of childless American women in their 40s has risen sharply since 1970s – I find the whole “Oh, these people are leading empty lives” stuff to be … condescending and aggravating. And I say that as someone who has a daughter who has, in fact, added a lot to my life.
