Unblogged Bits (Fri. 17-Sep-10 1130)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Identifying a key jobs program — and letting it die – “In a sane political world, this would be a pretty big scandal, and Republicans would be afraid to kill an effective jobs program with an unemployment rate near 10%. Instead, the GOP is counting on being rewarded by Americans for taking steps like these, and polls suggest that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”
  2. Stewart, Colbert to host D.C. rally on 10/30 – Wow. I am sooooooo tempted …
  3. USB-enhanced wall socket just makes more sense – Very cool. I’ll keep these in mind for future home improvement projects where they might be useful.
  4. Netbook Sales Are Crashing! Quick! Blame The iPad, Not The Lousy Netbooks! – I don’t use my netbook very much right now (though I expect to do so more in November, during NaNoWriMo). For someone who wants/needs a decent keyboard and a non-cell hone amount of screen size and more than 2-3h of battery life, it’s still the only way to go. Unfortunately for netbook manufacturers, that’s a tiny percent of the population.
  5. Publicly Funded Christian Aid Group Fires Non-Christians – It is certainly their right to insist on religious orthodoxy, as a religious organization. But not with my tax dollars.
  6. Best Buy CEO: iPad Is Cannibalizing Laptop Sales By A Shocking 50% (AAPL, BBY) – I think the iPad is probably useful for what a lot of people want a casual laptop for — games, browsing, media, very light typing. I expect it’s cannibalizing the netbook market even worse (though there still remains a distinct niche need for those).
  7. Saying “RSS Is Dead” Is Dead, Saying “RSS Is Not Dead” Is Not — Today. – How many people actually type feed URLs into their RSS reader?
  8. A spider web that spans rivers made from the world’s toughest biological material | Not Exactly Rocket Science – “If we pull this off, we’ll eat like kings!” — The Far Side
  9. Official BBC DIY Dalek blueprints – “Distributing out of print Dalek blueprints is arguably what the Internet was made for.”
  10. puppy care – Heh.
  11. Best Buy CEO: iPad Is Cannibalizing Laptop Sales By A Shocking 50% (AAPL, BBY) – Crikey!
  12. Inside Joke – Nice.
  13. Acid Attack Was A Hoax To Praise Jesus While Blaming An African-American – Yes, Ms Storro — disfiguring yourself and then making up a fictional attacker to blame for it is just what Jesus would do. Yeesh.
