Unblogged Bits (Sat. 18-Sep-10 1130)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Books – Dilbert Comic for September 18, 2010
  2. Questioning Terrorism Policy: schneier
  3. The War On Christmas Comes *Really* Early This Year – Oh, look: the sleazy, vendetta-driven, decadent, cityfied, politician ATHEIST is trying to destroy CHRISTMAS for EVERYONE! It’s a new fairy tale for our season!
  4. GOP only has 15% chance of taking Senate – (1) Still weeks to go before the election, and polls can swing wildly (and still be wrong). (2) Even if the GOP doesn’t retake the Senate, it will be close enough to bring the government to a freeze except when truckled to (after close to doing so even with only an ostensible 40 seats), (3) That would still be better than a Senate majority.
  5. Right-wing Swedes launch attack on girl who blogged about her sick mother – I’m so glad — and sad — that this sort of thing is not limited to just US politics. Is this what the American Right is referring to when they don’t want us to be “just like Europe”?
  6. SETI – SMBC September 18, 2010
  7. What if Superheroes were Hipsters? – ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews – HA!
  8. Boy drops DS in gorilla cage, inadvertently creates the best photo op ever, Nintendo DS DS News | GamesRadar
  9. But it moves! How we know the Earth rotates. [Starts With A Bang]: Ethan Siegel none@example.com
  10. Rally to restore sanity / March to keep fear alive – I almost wish my schedule permitted this. Good luck, gents!
  11. The $300 Million Button – I totally and utterly believe this. “I’m not here to enter into a relationship. I just want to buy something.” I have abandoned a potential purchase several times over this, even with an identity system like LastPass assisting me.
  12. Vaccines don’t cause autism – "So get your kids (and yourselves) vaccinated and save them & their playmates from this whooping cough bullshit, which is actually killing actual kids and not, you know, magically infecting them with autism. Vaccination is one of the greatest human discoveries ever — yes, Kanye, OF ALL TIME — has saved countless lives, and has made countless more lives significantly better. So: Buck. Up."
  13. Small comfort – Isthmus | The Daily Page – Some decent advice here, whether moving or simply cleaning. And I say that as a self-acknowledge, packratting hypocrite … 😉
  14. Best Buy: iPads not really killing notebook sales – I’m not quite sure how “incremental opportunities” could have gotten misquoted as “cannibalizing 50%.” Which makes me wonder of the Best Buy board had a little talking to Mr Dunn …
  15. Three Cheers for Russ Feingold : Dispatches from the Culture Wars
  16. Chuck & Beans. – If only …
  17. Video: Spray-on T-shirt demonstrated | Science | guardian.co.uk – I notice we didn’t get to see the removal process …
  18. Why do we eat chilli? | Jason Goldman | Science | guardian.co.uk – I’m not big into just eating peppers, and I don’t like the capsaicin burn that overwhelms the other flavors in food. But I do like things spicier than, say, Katherine.

  1. Well, that’s certainly an issue (and, honestly, the answer is probably more than ought to). More important to me — how many people are going to sit around for 15 minutes waiting for their t-shirt to “set.” (Also … what happens if you have body hair — how much is that an issue in taking it off. Also, sweating.)
