Unblogged Bits (Thu. 23-Sep-10 2332)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Been there, observed that – I confess, I am not good at keeping a poker face in these situations.
  2. Einstein’s time dilation apparent when obeying the speed limit – Cool …
  3. Russia Is Building Floating Nuclear Reactors Near the North Pole [Nuclear] – Wow. What could possibly go wrong?
  4. The .DOC File of J. Alfred Prufrock – “In the room the players come and go / Talking of their scores on Halo.” As someone who spent way too much time in high school studying this poem, I declare this marvelous.
  5. Text & History » Justice Scalia’s Originalist Sins
  6. Joe. My. God.: Juice Boxes Make You Gay! – Wow. The crazy, it burns!
  7. Senate GOP Blocks Corporate Campaign Disclosure Vote for the Second Time | People For the American Way – But … but … I’m positive today I heard the Senate Minority Whip declaring he was wholeheartedly in favor of full disclosure of campaign contributions. You mean … he was FIBBING?
  8. Inhofe Scoffs At The Notion That The Super-Rich Are Getting Richer – How many people in the US, other than the 400 wealthiest, saw their income go up 8% or more last year?
  9. 5 Things To Help Keep The Home Office Blues Away – There are certainly advantages to working at home — but I’m glad I do it only a minority of the time. Even though my interactions at the office aren’t deep, it’s still nice to have people to smile at or occasionally chat with.
  10. Scalia’s Selective Originalism – I can respect someone I disagree with if they are consistent and (given different premises) show integrity in their beliefs. It’s much harder to do so when that’s not true.
  11. Scientists investigating oil spill unsettled by calls from federal commission | New Orleans News, Local News, Breaking News, Weather | wwltv.com | Gulf Oil Spill – Politics trumping science is always ugly. And disappointing. And usually driven by moneyed interests.
  12. What Kevin Kelly learned about technology when he homeschooled his son – This is extraordinarily good advice. The idea that you should get good at being a beginner is profoundly important in today’s world.
  13. Surprise! Cheney-Bush-Rumsfeld lied us into Iraq – “Do you suppose any of this has made its way into George Bush’s memoirs scheduled for release six weeks from now? Do you suppose it will make its way into the high school history textbooks purchased by the Texas Board of Education? Do you suppose the next time an administration tries to lie its way into a war that someone in a position of authority, say a Secretary of State, will actually challenge those lies instead of repeating them publicly and saying years down the road how sorry he is to have been misled?”
  14. Adobe shows off plenoptic lenses that let you refocus an image after it’s taken (video) — Engadget – Oooooh …
  15. Stick Evolution – Excellent.

  1. The irony is that, as much as I despised the multiple weeks I spent in Freshman English (High School) studying that poem, I now find so many parts of it meaningful.

  2. People at work thought I was a bit odd when I asked for “The Wasteland and other poems” as a birthday present some 18 years ago.
