Unblogged Bits (Mon. 25-Oct-10 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Round-robin – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia – I looked this up for our CEO the other day when the question came up of its origin.
  2. Texas Court’s Bar on Unreliable Forensic Testimony Comes Too Late for Many – “When it comes to capital punishment, we cannot correct our mistakes.”
  3. Florida’s Gay Adoption Ban is Dead – Good.
  4. Republicans Benefit From Benefactor Who Said Women Should Enjoy Being Raped – Stay classy, shadowy benefactors of the GOP!
  5. Making the bigotry more transparent – “The 2010 cycle will be known for a lot of things, but the use of overt bigotry on the right shouldn’t be overlooked as of the key components of the elections.”
  6. TV Station Refuses To Run ‘Pull The Plug On Grandma’ Ad Against Grassley, Ignoring Context Of The Remark – It certainly looks to me like the Grassley quote fits the context of his message. Makes one wonder why WHO says otherwise.
  7. Google Sets New Internet Traffic Record – 6.4% of global internet traffic is from/to google
  8. ANIMAL TESTING: Cheezburger Network
  9. Mitch McConnell: I Want To Be Senate Majority Leader In Order To Make Obama A One-Term President – Remember, it’s all about winning. It’s not about right policy, or justice, or freedom, and it’s not about the American people, it’s all about making the Dems LOSE so the GOP (and their supporters) can WIN.
  10. Rep. Bachus’ Message To Banks: Give Your Money To GOP And Make Me Chairman Of Financial Reform – Obviously, people give to those who they think will benefit them most. Do the American people think the financial industry is fighting for the interests of the American people? Or, more appropriately, that reduced oversight of and regulation regarding the financial industry will benefit the average Joe on the street?
  11. Just Scratch “We, The People” – An interesting thought. The Founders did thing that anonymous speech was important (consider that the Federalist Papers were written under pseudonyms), but that was a contest of thoughht, not a buying out of the printing presses presses. Hell, they thought candidates actually campaigning was untoward and a sign of unworthiness to office. I think they’d be appalled by Citizens United and the flood of anonymous Big Money into the system.
  12. Husband confronts abortion protesters – My condolences to Mr Gouveia and his wife on their loss, and on the pain inflicted on them by these yahoos. And my appreciation, sir, for your standing up to them and they hypocrisy, judgmentalism, and dismissive, unloving behavior.
  13. Robert Reich: ‘We’re losing our democracy’: Gaius Publius
  14. Pumpkin Illumination 101: CFLs, LEDs, and Lasers, Oh My [Video] – we use tea lights, but, yes, we only light our pumpkins the evening of Halloween. Nice idea on the spices, btw …
  15. 2010 Rove Dismisses 2004 Rove’s Deep Concerns About Secret Money In Elections – Because billionaires need all the influence they can get against labor unions, right?
  16. Constructive – Gaming the system FTW!
  17. Tmobile Throttles Unlimited Data Plans, Forbids Tethering – Yeah, about that “Unlimited” …
  18. Why Engineers Prefer the CLI – The command line is much faster if you know what you’re doing for a specific task. The GUI is arguably more effective if you have a wide array of tasks that you need to be able to explore.
