Unblogged Bits (Fri. 17-Dec-10 1030)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Unsought Christmas Combat – Bottom line: “The Religious Right claims there is a war on Christmas. This is a transparently false allegation designed to fire up the faithful. It is the religious who are causing the conflict. There need not be any confrontation over Christmas if Christian groups would simply respect the separation of church and state and stop seeking government endorsement of their religious beliefs. There is ample space for nativity scenes on church property or the private property of believers.”
  2. Politifact Announces 2010 Lie Of The Year: Alan
  3. Sledding Behind a Fighter Jet Seriously Ups the Death Wish Ante – Yeah, it’s all fun and games until someone hits the afterburners …
  4. Florida Atheists Told To Change Shirts Or Leave City Council Meeting – Oh, no! Some people were offended by their shirts! Which offense seems to be shirts that (a) identify the person as belonging to an atheist grou and (b) quoting the pre-1954 Pledge of Allegiance. And that is, in some folks’ eyes, enough to get you barred from a city council meeting. Coincidentally, one of my quotations today was this pertinent gem from Abe Fortas: http://wist.info/fortas-abe/13226/
  5. Google Labs – Books Ngram Viewer – Cool — track word frequency over the years from the ever-growing Google Books dataset.
  6. Stuxnet apparently as effective as a military strike – While there are dangers as-yet-undreamt-of in full-blown cyber-warfare, I’ll confess that if an attack had to be made, I’d rather see this kind than (probably less effective, and certainly more lethal) air strikes.
  7. Judge doubles bail for band members who blocked freeway as a stunt – Boing Boing – You gotta love any warning from a judge that promises “absolutely hideous results” if the defendants repeat their activity whilst out on bail.
  8. World’s Crappiest Racists Are Mad About the Thor Movie – What a bunch of maroons.
  9. Racists Totally Freak Out Over Idris Elba Playing Norse God in ‘Thor’ – ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews
  10. Marvel Really Is Bringing Back Crossgen, for Some Reason – Some of Crossgen I liked (“Ruse” comes to mind), others of it left me cold. I can’t say I’ve been dying to see the Crossgen Universe back, but I’ll probably pick up a few issues of the stuff I cared for to see how it is.
  11. ‘Thor’ To Be Boycotted By ‘Conservative Citizens’ Group – If you actually go to the CofCC site, it’s clear in this case “conservative citizens” means “white supremacy group” (a variety of Confederate flags for sale, “shocking” statistics about black-caused crime in the sidebar). They also proudly proclaim, “The CofCC is the only serious nationwide activist group that sticks up for white rights!” So, no, hardly surprising. (FWIW, I’m not wowed with the casting either, but not because I feel personally insulted by Marvel.)
