Unblogged Bits (Wed. 12-Jan-11 1031)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Snow In 49 States Right Now (MAP)
  2. Rush Limbaugh says a dozen incredibly offensive things – War Room – Salon.com – So what else is new? The problem is not Limbaugh saying all this crapola, it’s that folks listen to him and BELIEVE him.
  3. How to Fail, Part 1: Why is failing so hard? – De’s putting together a talk on failure for a Writer’s Conference. Good stuff.
  4. How Glenn Beck And Fox News Successfully Painted AZ Shooter As Hitler, Marx Devotee | TPMDC – That’s a heck of a reading list. Yes, Hitler and Marx are there, but so are Orwell, A Huxley, A Rand, Bradbury, Baum, and Hemingway, among others. To call it ideologically incoherent would be to complement it — but that’s also to assume that it’s an honest list.

And yet somehow you folks on the left are STILL trying to blame the right wing, talk radio, sarah palin etc. The guy was a nutjob with no discernable political ideology, yet the facts did not matter to the left. (or to you) You immediately all jumped on this to blame Palin and “right wing rhetoric” despite the facts.

Funny, the left does, attacks those they disagree with and then wonders why the discourse in this country is so uncivil. Might I suggest those on the Left start looking in the mirror when it comes to angry, violent rhetoric? That might be a good start.

The guy was a nutjob with no discernable (or coherent) political ideology. Yet, faced with a media environment where Democrats and the Left are consistently painted by political leaders and broadcasters on the Right with (literal) targets, demonized, called traitors and murderers and conspirators to destroy the country and murder granma, againt whom only a war to take them down will suffice, leavened with all the suggestions that “Second Amendment solutions” might be necessary — surprise, surprise, the target he chose was a Democrat.

I agree that some on the fringe Left make use of violent, eliminationist, war-like, murderous rhetoric — but those aren’t the Democratic congressional leaders, politicians, prominent candidates, party spokepeople, or punditry. The rough equivalent of Palin and Bachmann and Limbaugh and Beck and O’Reilly and the like may be angry, but they’re not suggesting that armed revolution and “don’t retreat, reload” are the approaches to deal with the murderous, non-American, crypto-Muslim, God-hating, America-hating liberals who are going to destroy us all.

The nutjob may not have known which direction he was going, and ultimately he bears responsibility for pulling the trigger — but he was very clearly told which way and at whom he should be aiming.

Sorry, but as a rational, logical person I deal in actualities. You have nothing, no evidence to support your view. It’s pure conjecture based on your victim mentality as a member of the Left and prejudice of opposing viewpoints.

If you can honestly tell me there’s not massive violent rhetoric on the left as well then you must have blinders on. Hell, President Obama himself is guilty of such rhetoric.

Yes, I know, you might have to read *gasp* Michelle Malkin, but perhaps it’ll open your mind a bit.

I do have the actualities of the rhetoric and symbolism used by folks like Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Malkin and the like.

It is, in fact, conjecture that this kind of speech was what influenced this (presumptive) lunatic. It’s not uninformed conjecture, as clearly (as I noted) such rhetoric is meant to influence beliefs and actions (even if not, I hope, the particular actions taken here).

I’m not quite sure where you come across seeing me as having a “victim mentality.”

Can you point me to some “massive violent rhetoric” from the Left? In particular from Pres. Obama? Something that mirrors these kind of statements, not from zanies on fringe websites, but from political leaders and pundits and candidates and bestsellers and spokesfolk for the Right — the one who talk about Democrats and liberals as “enemies” and “traitors” and “targets,” as folks out “destroy” America and “outlaw” Christians and kill grandma through “death panels” and turn us into a “tyranny,” folks against whom we need a “revolution” with “Second Amendment remedies,” all accompanied by pictures of guns and target and cross-hairs.

Or shall we compare the number of lunatic shooters of the past few years who (or whose families) claimed claimed Glenn Beck as their inspiration, vs. those who claimed Keith Olbermann?

  5. Michelle Malkin is the worlds angriest anchor baby, and it is fitting that she lives in the Springs.

Though I am amused that Mike W. is unable to back up his arguement.

  6. Malkin lives in the Springs? Thanks, BD — you’ve just given me the best reason I’ve ever had (and I have a lot of them already) to vote: to cancel out whatever wingnuttery she’s punching in at the ballot box.
