Unblogged Bits (Fri. 14-Jan-11 1030)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Vanderbilt Maintains Policy, But Religious Right Declares Victory – Don’t let the truth get in the way of our posturing!
  2. ‘Compassionate Conservative’ Kansas Gov. Brownback Proposes Ending Funding For State Mental Hospital – Ah, the old “well, someone else will probably be able to pay for it” argument.
  3. Sen. Mike Lee Calls Child Labor Laws Unconstitutional – Of course he does.
  4. d r i f t g l a s s: When the Outside Voice – “Responsible people leave neither loaded guns nor paranoid, eliminationist ideologies laying around for the mentally ill to play with.”
  5. Will The U.S. Really Default On Its Debts If Debt Ceiling Isn’t Raised? – “But maybe the smartest thing for Geithner to do would simply be to stop paying the salaries of members of Congress and their staffs.” Well, that would certainly make things interesting.
  6. Unusual “safety certificate” from the 1940s: Mark Frauenfelder
  7. How fair use brought us VCRs, copiers—and nude Barbie enchiladas – Fair use is what makes culture … culture, not commercial.
  8. Verizon’s “New Every Two” program going the way of the dodo
  9. Consequences – And they get the whole pie!
  10. Sign of the Times – Look — it’s even more unscientific crazy within the unscientific crazy! Plus, “apparently people are freaking out that their signs changed and now their tattoos are wrong.”
  11. Delivery instructions
  12. Another setback for conservatives’ minority outreach – Better living through hagiography!
  13. The right finds the strangest things to whine about: Steve Benen
  14. Taking a stand, taking a seat – I can see the attractiveness of the idea, but also the “loss of signal” that it would cause (though it might also lead to more Congresscritters not going along with their partisan brethren for any given reaction).
  15. Fears Over Arizona Shooting Have Congress Looking to Cash-Strapped Local Law Enforcement to Provide Extra Security – FoxNews.com – Hmmmm … I’m sure Blackwater would be more than happy to contract for such services …
  16. Carolyn McCarthy unveils gun-control bill – Shira Toeplitz – POLITICO.com – I don’t expect any of these proposals to go anywhere, given the makeup of the House (and Senate), but it’s good they’re being discussed.
  17. Rosscott, Inc. » See Something? Cite Something. – I usually try to drill down to the original site on these sorts of things, often because there’s more interesting stuff. (I try to do the same on aggregated / re-aggregated / re-reaggregated and commented upon and snippetized news stories.)
  18. Vancouver hospice scrapped over ‘cultural sensitivity’ – The Globe and Mail – “Cultural sensitivity” that translates into “we don’t want those people around here” is cultural sensitivity that cannot stand — whether it’s aversion to race, religion, or the dead and dying. If that’s a matter of my putting my personal or cultural values above Ms Fan’s — so be it.

  1. 8. Makes sense to me. With the iPhone contract, Verizon doesn’t need “New Every Two” to bring in new customers. It would be a waste of money for them tom continue the program. They’re certainly within their rights to stop offering it, although I think they would do well to continue it for existing customers (if only to help retain their business).

    13. So… On the one hand, they complain that Palin’s opponents see a link between her and the shootings, and accuse them of finger-pointing. On the other hand, they point fingers at their opponents even after their accusations are proved to be false. On the gripping hand, why would we expect anything but rank hypocrisy from these mallet-heads?

    15. I do love irony.
