Unblogged Bits (Fri. 14-Jan-11 1630)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. It’s Full of Stars – DORK TOWER, Friday, January 14, 2011
  2. Steele exits stage right – And politics becomes just that much less entertaining.
  3. ‘Is there no other vocabulary available?’ – It’s alternately amusing and appalling to see Palin and her supporters use vocabulary to describe bloody, bigoted, murderous attacks on Jews over history as characterizations of how people have criticized her. First “blood libel,” now “pogrom” … what next, “Holocaust”?
  4. Apparently we’re only ‘mostly free’ – “It is curious, isn’t it? The Heritage Foundation would apparently be more satisfied if our economic freedoms were more in line with countries that have socialized medicine, impose higher tax rates, and in Ireland’s case, is in need of a massive bailout to prevent a catastrophe.”
  5. Fischer: “We Are Looking Into the Face of Satan Himself” When Palin is Attacked – Yes, that’s Bryan Fischer telling us that criticizing Sarah Palin is “unvarnished demonic evil … pure homicidal rage and hate.” Projecting much, Bryan?
  6. Is Limbaugh Perfect? Rush Attacks Gillibrand For Saying ‘We Can Conduct Ourselves Better’ – Now one should really wonder how many leaders of the Religious Right will respond to Limbaugh’s attack on a central tenet of Christianity — that we are, in fact, not as good as we can be, that we all are in need of improvement (and that, in fact, we cannot be good enough to merit salvation without God’s grace). I suspect the answer is … um … none.
  7. Dr. King’s Nightmare: Cujo359
  8. Geological Stratigraphic Column Cake – It’s yummicational!
  9. Justin Bieber URL Shortener Bieber.ly Shuts Down After Cease And Desist – It’s worth a side note to consider what will have happened to any links posted using the now-defunct Bieber.ly service. Yeah, such goofiness is its own reward, but as a higher-level consideration of the dangers of URL-shorteners …
  10. Windows 7 SP1 download due today, says Microsoft Technet post – Not to mistrust Microsoft or anything, but maybe wait for a week or two of post-release patching before installing SP1 …
  11. The War on Christmas Lives On: Resolution to Ban References to “Holiday Tree” – Because we love freedom, we have to have official government names for stuff!
  12. What’s Our DecafCon Level? – Oh, man, I wish we still had carafes like this at our office, I would SO be making one of these.
  13. Town meeting attendee confronts GOP freshman over health reform repeal – Beautiful.
  14. SMBC January 14, 2011
  15. Michigan Lawmaker Feels Threatened By ‘Extreme Rhetoric’ Of Anti-Gay Groups – Whom Would Jesus Shoot?
  16. 34,000 Year Old Life Found Trapped in Salt Bubbles [Bacteria] – Very, very cool.

  1. Re: vocabulary
“Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Palin’s ilk think that they are righteous and that they are destined for heaven. Therefore any opposition is persecution.
That these same people universally practice a sort of Christ-less Christianity — rejecting all the love the poor and the downtrodden bits and the anti-materialist bits — is ironic.
