Unblogged Bits (Mon. 17-Jan-11 1630)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Only 1 In 4 Americans Want Health Care Repeal; 43% Want Stronger Reform – “Republicans ran for office, and won, with the premise that Democrats were not listening to the will of the American people. Will the newly-empowered GOP now listen?” Of course not, because it’s all about waving “the willing of the people” around like a flag as a cover for doing what they want, regardless of the truth of the matter.
  2. Kid’s petition against school’s “No hugging” policy – Well said — and shame on the dolts running that school.
  3. Feature: Why you should always encrypt your smartphone – The problem is, entering a robust passcode (or even a trivial passcode) is a PitA on a mobile (speaking from experience). I’d rather see this settled legally. In the meantime, it’s useful to understand what the cops can (probably) do right now.
  4. The first mammoth cloning experiment is officially underway [Mad Science] – “But John, when ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ breaks down, the pirates don’t trample the tourists …”
  5. Nation of Prudes Meet Nation that Sexualizes Nearly Everything – I don’t think there’s an easy answer here — there’s certainly a measure of overlap between the groups, but not completely. Part of it may be that we’ve set certain taboos — it’s okay to show everything all sexy-sexy EXCEPT body parts a, b, or c, or actions x, y, or z. It’s not rational, but taboos usually aren’t.
